The humble beginnings of the AKMA-UK came about from the concerted efforts of a small group of friends determined to bring together a relatively small number of Kottayam alumni spread across the UK in the early 2000's. Our first meeting was in 2003.
The first few meetings were grand and showed the enterprising, resourceful spirit of the organisers, mostly well-established alumni who had been in the UK for many years.
Of course, to maintain the momentum was hard - the inevitable pressures of job-seeking, exams, family priorities did have an impact, especially for recent arrivals in the so-called "noughties" decade.
AKMA has had its ups and downs, but the "Kottayam spirit" was clearly alive, awaiting the right moment.
The turnaround was spearheaded by the enthusiasm and hard work of executive committee members over many years as well as a handful of unsung behind-the-scenes heroes and heroines. The springboard provided by two fantastically successful meets in Stoke-on-Trent (2015, 2016 - under the leadership of two successive executive committees) has propelled AKMA-UK from a struggling organisation to a well-oiled engine of sophistication, pride and joy.
